A Word On Style

JUST FOR MEN

ü     Fashion Trends For Spring and Summer 2002

Spring's Buzz Words

Elegant, Wearable and Individual

Just as an escapist mode took over spring fashions for women, the trends for men's clothing has also changed. The return to classic styles - familiar patterns and comfortable fabrics - started before Sept.11th, but it is strengthening now. People are gravitating towards the familiar for a sense of comfort.

Over the past year, the customer has changed and now everybody's ready for a change. The customer is more serious about his life and this will be reflected in his clothes.

ü      THE BUSINESS SUIT. There will be more dressing up in suits, shirts and ties. We will see seasonal fabrics, more two-buttons, center vents, stronger shoulders and double-breasted jackets. We will see darker fabrics and stripes. The key is dressy, serious clothing.

ü    LOOKING BACK . Two-button blazers and other traditional looks suddenly look fresh and new again.

ü      STYLES. Double-breasteds are number one in importance because they're the traditional power suit. But the double-breasted won't only be the usual classic six-on-four-button style. The newest model is the four-on-one-button with a higher stance. Then there's the traditional six-on-two-button in the more classic lines.

ü COLOR.  Black is no longer dominating; in fact, there's no one color. We will see dark and darker suits in blue and gray with accent colors.

ü    NEW PRICE ZONE. Customers are cutting back and are more price-conscious. Customers who previously bought suits from $1,300 to $1,600 are now buying $895 to $1,000 suits.

ü  DRESS SHIRT. Classic styling and versatility characterize this spring's dress shirts. The new breed of dress shirts is made for both business and pleasure. Today's styles combine the classic construction of a traditional dress shirt with the casual details of sport shirts, like untraditional fabrics, higher button placements at the collar and distinct infusions of color and pattern. The result: a shirt that can be worn with a necktie and/or a pair of khakis. Men are moving from knits to wovens.
  • The resurrection of the white classic button-down oxford is a major trend for spring.
  • Kenneth Cole dress shirts focus on bias cuts and collar options for a casual esthetic.
  • Nautica is launching its J-Class collection, a fashion grouping of dress shirts with such European influences as wider spread or longer point collars that can be worn as either dress or sport shirts. Pattern - minichecks, glen plaids, windowpanes and herringbones - is also a major feature of J-Class.
  • Ron Chereskin's debut dress shirt collection, a license of Kellwood, was designed with the concept that "men want to look dressed up without the constrictions of a traditional dress shirt." Chereskin included convertible cuffs, several collar options and high button placement - which forces the collar to stand up without a tie.
ü PATTERNS.  Spring's stripes are all a-tilt. Bias cuts and diagonal patterns have swept across everything from cuffs to collars, ties to belts.
ü SPRING SPORTSWEAR'S UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE. There will be alternatives that are tasteful, casual and relaxed. You will see three different kinds of sportswear:
  • Business sportswear - better dress slacks, a good Italian knit shirt or a crisp woven, and even a sport coat (hopefully, no longer the khakis-and-polo outfit).
  • Dressy sportswear (for the club scene or even a good restaurant) - a much dressier sport shirt (like a Tommy Bahama or Zegna knit) with good dressy trousers (like Balin Elan). Jackets are optional.
  • Mix of casuals - active or street-active sportswear.
ü DENIM. Denim is on the increase, with denims in five-pocket, carpenter and utility-influenced styles.
ü SHOES. Touch economic times are usually associated with a return to classic, conservative shoe choices. We should see more traditional wingtips and tasseled loafers. Customers will go for a brand they recognize for its tradition in quality and style.

ü SUNWEAR .  Sunwear manufacturers have always maintained that a cool pair of shades is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to spruce up a man's wardrobe. As for general trends, rimless will still be a popular choice, as will fashion wraps with flash mirroring and rich-colored lenses like deep reds, oranges and golds.

ü WATCHES.  Watches that offer classic styling and modern sensibilities are likely to be popular this spring. There is a renewed interest in leather bands also. Round-faced watches are also becoming popular as the pendulum swings back from the most recent trend in square casings. The "bigger is better" design esthetic should continue to thrive.
