Best Bets For
Fall and Winter 2002/2003
Here are our picks
as the clothes and accessories most likely to make it from the runway to
reality.
ü
What Else To Look For
-
Military inspired jackets - often in leather
-
The narrow trouser that tucks into boots, puddles into
folds at the ankles or zips open from ankle to hem is the one to pant for. The
tighter the better; look for lots of stretch fabric.
-
Cropped pants score big.
-
Parkas, duffles and pea coats.
-
Sheer floral print tops and/or dresses.
-
Graphically-patterned knit coats.
-
One item to buy is the embellished shawl. Long mufflers and
floaty scarves are major on both sides of the Atlantic, accessorizing everything
from coats to evening dresses.
-
Patchwork and fabric inlays.
-
Leather, leather, leather.
ü
FABRIC
-
Corduroy
-
Tweeds
-
Denim
-
Satin

DAY OF
THE JACKET
A
wardrobe basic goes fashion forward!
- Today's jackets are signature, stand-alone
pieces in their own right. And they're all about freedom - from the
fabrications, which range from denim and cotton twill to corduroy and suede,
to the sheer variety of shapes.
- Classic blazers are always great.
- Denim jackets are on the upswing - and in
every different shapes. Some of the jean jackets are blazers with fell
sleeves, some are typical jean jackets, and some are really short motorcycle
jackets with standup collars and snaps.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT.
If you are wondering
if miniskirts and ankle-length skirts can co-exist in your wardrobe, the
answer is definitely yes.
For every woman who
used to adhere to the strict dictates of fashion, the new sense of
freedom and individuality comes with much relief. Nowhere is that new
freedom more apparent than in the relaxed attitude toward hemlines
both in skirts and even pants.
This fall is filled
with options, whether its a cropped pant, a long and lean look, a very
fluid pant, or a short skirt, a knee-length skirt or longer skirt. It
all works; its just a matter of finding ones comfort level.

BELTS
- Last season's hip belt is this
season's waist belt.
|
ü
SHOES
- Boots are on a toot, in every heel height and leg height, in media from
suede and leather to crocodile and sequins.
- Pointed boots are the rage for fall.

|
 |
ü
LEGWEAR'S KEY LOOKS
- Luxury fabrics
- Knee-highs
- Leg warmers
- Lurex influences
- Slipper socks
- Animal motifs, such as dogs and cats
|
ü
WRAPS &
HATS
- The shearling coat - with fleece on the inside and suede outside - was
hot on the runway.
- Mufflers are the new Pashmina.
- Four hats predominate: The visored cape, the fedora, the beret -
especially the fur or fake fur versions - and the fur toque.

ü
JEWELRY - TRENDS THAT
SHINE
- Pearls - Delicate and ladylike, pearls are as fresh and modern as
ever, whether shown in a simple strand, a hip lariat or a classic ring.
- Bigger jewelry and colored stones are popular for fall.
- Adjustable link bracelets and necklaces.
- Nature-inspired drippy bracelets, necklaces and earrings.
- Long drop earrings, often with diamonds.
- Semiprecious stones: turquoise, amethyst, peridot and jade.
|
ü
COOL SUNGLASS TRENDS
- Rimless shields with colored lenses like green,
burgundy and orange.
- Oversize, retro-inspired acetate frames and aviators
in various sizes.
- Subtle logo treatment on temples, brow bars and even
lenses.
- Double bridges and suspended rimless lenses mounted
from a brow bar in metal or plastic.
- Gray flash and gradient lenses.
- Mounted lenses, some of which dont fill the frame
entirely.

EVENING
STARS
- Eveningwear isn't just about the little black dress anymore - though
there are some great ones offered this season. Right now, designers are
showing lots of sexy burnt-velvet looks, as well as flirty blouses and
dresses with interesting geometric patterns.
|
 |
ü
MAKEUP
- Flawless to the pore, the new fall face looks natural, but is definitely
not makeup free. Foundation, concealers, luminizers and powder are all part
of this new natural look.
- For the first time in many seasons, makeup artists did more than pay lip
service to lip color. Vivid, defined lips in shades ranging from brownish to bright reds are
back with a smash.
- The smoky eye continues, following the natural shape of the eye.
- Choose either lips or eyes to emphasize.
|
ü
HAIR
- Laid-back looks were all the rage at the New York Fall Collections.
Hair for fall 2002 mostly appeared undone.
- Instead of the hair-do, this is the season of the hair un-do.
- Even when hair is pulled back, as in ponytails and buns, stray
tendrils wisp away. And even when the hair has been arranged, the look is
still messy. You don't want to look like you've just come from two hours at
the salon.
- The one big hair consistency in all fashion capitals is the
side part.
- Bangs continue, either swept to the side asymmetrically or
worn as a full-on fringe.
