JUST FOR WOMEN

ü Best Bets For Spring and Summer 2002

As the real world reeled under terrorist attacks, retaliatory bombings and biological warfare, an escapist mode took over Spring fashions. Even before September 11th, with worries over a global recession, designers sought sanctuary in other cultures and in the past. We see a definite return to the classics. What people want is to feel safe and secure, and people are comfortable with the familiar.

ü INFLUENCES

70's Nostalgia - soft fluid long skirts, wide leg pants, "tie dyed" denim, soft blouses with ruffles, the blouse tied at the waist, the vest - often oversized, caftans.
Free Spirit - hippies, gypsies, wispy fairy-tale dresses, flamenco looks with bohemian details. The gypsy look can be a mix of Victorian or peasant blouses, jeweled T-shirts, swirling skirts and lots of jewelry.
The Components of Charm - lace under a tailored suit, scalloped edges, extra detailing from topstitching to piping to seaming on jackets and bottoms. Silhouettes are simpler but designers are adding such details as frills, florals and slits for a more feminine touch.
Menswear Influences - but softer and more romantic proportions - pinstriping with soft pants, scalloped edge skirts, soft fluid jackets. Wider shoulders over lean skirts and narrow pants.
Oriental Influences.
The Trench - in jacket and coat form.
African American Art and The Safari Suit - softly tailored.

ü FABRICS

Chiffon - soft, feminine
Stretch fabrics - comfort
Microfiber - comfort and easy care
Leather - ultra supple leather - jackets fashioned in bright colors - hand painted, washed, embossed and razor slit seams
Tartan plaids, graphic prints, and florals
Stripes - all over the map this spring
Exotic Animal Prints - animal prints with a twist - python stretch in pants and jackets

ü COLOR

White
Natural shades - off-white, putty, beige, taupe
Black - but with brights - lemon, red, and aqua
Blues - navy, cobalt - resort navy with ultra brights
Purples - iris, violet, lavender
Greens - blue-greens, lime
Warm tones - tangerine, lemon

Perhaps it's a sign of recessionary times, but accessories , particularly belts and handbags are in demand this season, as shopper's search for ways to spruce up their wardrobe without purchasing an entirely new ensemble. Everyone needs brightening up, and accessories are a good way to do it.

ü HANDBAGS .

Big, slouchy carryall (the "hobo" bag is back again but re-worked) or structured and large (almost briefcase in feeling) for daytime.
Large tote type - soft leathers - soft colors
Small hand-held for evening - beaded, painted
Hand-tooled or embossed a la Fendi
Fringed, studded, woven or patchwork - 70's inspired
Alligator, python, crocodile, and lizard - real and faux
Handbags and totes in sun-kissed colors, trippy tropical prints and beach-friendly material as straw or wicker.

ü BELTS

Contour - wide, studded, embroidered - makes a statement
Beaded chain belts
Narrow - 3 and 4 worn at a time - low slung

ü SHOES.

High strappy sandals - even some platform
Ankle straps very important & sexy - either buckle or lace up
Mules - high or mid heel
Open toe high heels
Patent leather - not only black but colors too
Fabric - printed fabrics
Decorated with stones, embroidery, beading, fringe
Casual flat sandals with lace up or the re-worked espadrille
Wedges

ü THE LEG

Natural - no hosiery - sun kissed - daytime
Hosiery - natural tones - for day
Evening - nude leg or very sheer black

ü HATS .

Although hats have taken a backseat to jewelry and handbags in past seasons, they appear to be making a comback.
"We have a resurgence in the hat business. . .," said Eileen Warner, Divisional Merchandise Manager at Saks Fifth Avenue. "There seems to be an interest from the younger customer. They're seeing more hats out there on the street."

ü JEWELRY

Pearls - Delicate and ladylike, pearls are as fresh and modern as ever, whether shown in a simple strand, a hip lariat or a classic ring.
Bigger jewelry and colored stones are popular for spring.

ü MAKEUP . - Makeup matches the global view. It will be barely there, fresh-faced look for daytime or over-the-top colorful for night - matte or shiny.

Porcelain pale skin or bronzed complexions sheer and dewey
Light peachy glossy lips, nude shadow bases, and bronze shinner cheeks - the "hint" of makeup
Healthy neutral beiges at Calvin Klein - fresh and clean
Lancome is showing earthy bronzes on eyes, pinks on cheeks, and berry glossy tones on lips
Prada shows "sooty, smoky" eyes mixed with Vaseline for a shiny look and natural glossy lips
Thick eyeliner for nighttime for none for day - bright turquoise eyeshadow for night or a natural rose colored skin tone with shimmer for day.

ü HAIR

Low-maintenance glamour
Simple looks
Fluffy, curly hair - romantic - 70's reminiscence
Straight but lots of volume - add hair extensions
Wavy textured hair - soft, volume at the shoulder and below
The "high" tight ponytail - or ballet inspired chignons at the neck
Braids
Side swiped bangs, peek-a-boo bangs, or none at all
Big and bold soft waves - again, volume from the jawline down
Color - warmer shades - highlights warm colors
